IntroductionYes, you read that title correctly, this article describes how to install Visual Studio 6.0 on Windows 10. Visual Studio 6.0 is still widely used around the globe, and there is a need to provide support for legacy applications and developers who still want to use this platform.
Also, being the old timer that I am, I still like using Visual Studio 6.0 who's interface was specifically designed for C development. Sure, I admit I might be a little resistant to change, but I also find the MFC wizards are more C friendly and I like the ability to record macros which was no longer supported with newer versions of Visual Studio.I have read several articles on this subject most are good but seem to be incomplete or missing one or two key elements. I wanted to document what I have discovered through trial and error to be the best approach for installing Visual Studio 6.0 on later versions of Windows without the need for a 3rd party tool or installer.Clean Up Previous AttemptsIf you are reading this article, you have no doubt already attempted to install Visual Studio 6.0 on Windows 10 already and it has failed.
If this is the case you will need to do some manual cleanup first before we get started. Follow these steps to manually clean up any previous installation attempts:. Delete Installation FoldersYou will need to remove any installation folders from previous installation attempts, they are usually located under C:Program Files (x86) folder for 64-Bit OS and C:Program Files folder on 32-Bit OS. Member 12969497 28-Apr-Apr-19 17:55Visual Studio 6.0 is a perfect IDE. 25 years old and it still runs perfectly, best C platform ever.
Why would I want to update it? I can't stand skinned interfaces. They made it in an era where automatic updates didn't exist, good I can't stand automatic updates. It runs perfectly in Windows 7.
What a dodgy trick by Microsoft, program compability wizard, oh its not compatible! It won't run! Visual Studio 6.0 runs perfectly in Windows 7. The truth is Microsoft don't want you using old software, but I have every ancient version of it backed up and I'll keep using it forever, it was engineered to perfection, its just so nice not to be using skinned up software nagging you about automatic updates everyday. Kirk StowellI would like to thank you for your guide on installing Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise Edition on a PC with Microsoft Windows 10. I had tried many times to install this software on Windows 10, but I didn;t know I had to change the Compatibility Settings of the Setup file to 'Windows XP' and to disable some features from being installed.
All the times, I started the setup with Compatibility for Windows 8 and installed everything. This caused the Setup program to stop responding when it started to update system settings. Now, the program is successfully installed and I am going to install MSDN Library. Member 10245680 29-Dec-17 2:2829-Dec-17 2:28Hi Kirk,This article is hugely appreciated. Has saved us so much time.
